The Goal: Build Connections in a New Place

Created in collaboration with Gray Walsh and Sophie Carter

The Challenge

Socializing in a new environment can be daunting, with many struggling to find like-minded people or safe spaces to connect.

Traditional social platforms often prioritize fast-paced interactions, which can feel impersonal and overwhelming. Mozaik aims to provide a more intentional and tailored experience.

The Solution

Mozaik simplifies social networking by offering a structured yet flexible way for users to meet others in their area. The app personalizes connections based on shared interests and user recommendations, making it easier for users to find their community and move their created connections offline and into real friendship.

A key feature of Mozaik is its integration of certified third places—verified public and private spaces designed to encourage safe, low-pressure socialization. These include cafés, bookstores, co-working spaces, and community hubs that align with Mozaik’s mission of fostering genuine connections.

Users can explore these locations through the app, attend hosted meetups, or casually visit to engage with others in a comfortable environment.

Design Approach

Through UX user testing, we came to the conclusions that our final design must promote comfort and accessibility while also encouraging users to return to the app after finding connections. My graphic design contributions to Mozaik focus on three key elements:

  • Bottom Navigation Bar – The core of the user experience, featuring clear, intuitive icons that provide quick access to key areas: Home, Explore, Connections, and Profile. Designed for seamless navigation, the layout ensures users always feel in control of their experience.

  • Logo – The Mozaik logo embodies the concept of interconnected pieces forming a whole. The design conveys warmth and inclusivity, reflecting the app’s goal of helping users build their social circles.

  • Explore Pages – A visually engaging and dynamic space where users can discover new people, events, and local groups. With an emphasis on personalization, the Explore section helps users find connections relevant to their interests and social comfort level.

How It Works

  • Personalized Profiles – Users set up profiles with interests, location preferences, and interaction styles.

  • Tailored Connections – Users can also recommend friends or acquaintances to others in their Mozaik network, fostering organic introductions and trusted connections.

  • Certified Third Places – Users can explore verified social spaces in their area, helping them connect in real-world environments designed to encourage meaningful interactions.

  • Pace Control – Users engage when and how they feel comfortable, ensuring a stress-free experience in forming new relationships.

The Impact

By focusing on user comfort, thoughtful design, community-driven recommendations, and verified social spaces, Mozaik fosters genuine relationships, making new places feel like home faster.
